How Much Sleep Do We Need?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night to be well rested, and athletes may benefit from as many as 10 hours. The study also states that sleep is as important to athletes as consuming enough calories and nutrients. However, many people struggle with getting a good night’s rest. A 2019 study involving 72 subjects, with 47 experiencing anxiety and 25 experiencing poor sleep, were given 25 milligrams of CBD in capsule form each day. In the first month, 79.2 percent of the patients reported lower anxiety levels and 66.7 percent reported better sleep. With declining anxiety levels, it’s much easier for people to fall asleep.
Furthermore, CBD may help with REM behavior disorder, a condition that is thought to be associated with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD) is when you physically act out your dreams, often with vocal sounds and violent arm and leg movements. During deep sleep, the body is typically immobilized to prevent sleepers from reacting physically to their dreams. However, in RBD, this paralysis doesn’t occur, causing disruptive sleep and possible injury. According to a case report from the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, four patients that suffered from RBD that were treated with CBD had a reduction in the frequency of RBD-related events. After discontinuation of CBD, the RBD movements returned with the same frequency and intensity.
Getting enough sleep is as vital as eating a balanced diet and regular exercise. Having poor sleeping habits can even produce dangerous situations, including drowsy driving and poor motor skills. Joseph Maroon, a clinical professor and neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, advocates for CBD as a sleeping aid. Its therapeutic properties are able to ease anxiety and pain, providing comfort for people and improving their physical and mental conditions for sleep.
